Throw your garbage in a trash can.
That's what we've been told, but even trash cans have their limits.
According to a document released by the Ministry of the Environment in March of this year, if we continue to throw garbage at the current pace, Japan's landfills will be full in 23.5 years. When landfills are full, we'll have to find new sites. But there's some good news. The amount of garbage generated per person has decreased slightly from last year's report, and the remaining life of landfills has increased slightly.
First, reduce the amount of garbage. Then, separate what can be recycled so that it can be reused. Even if we can't achieve zero garbage right away, by reducing it little by little, the day may come when we no longer need to build new landfills.
