Last month, the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released its Sixth Assessment Report (AR6). This time, it was more strongly determined than in previous reports that "global warming is caused by human activities." The current global average temperature is about +1.1° compared to 1850-1900. It was reported that the temperature over the past five years was the highest since 1850. In addition, 90% of the glacier retreat and the decrease in melting ice in the Arctic Ocean since 1990 are due to human influence, and there was also a possibility that there would be almost no sea ice at least once by 2050.
Regarding the future, all scenarios predict that the 1.5° will be exceeded by 2040. With the current policy, it is predicted that not only 1.5°, but even 2.0° will be exceeded within this century. It was also stated that the possibility of sea levels rising by 2m by 2100, meaning that most coasts around the world will be flooded and the lives of millions of people will be threatened, "cannot be ruled out."
The IPCC only reports on past data, current conditions, and future predictions scientifically, and does not propose any specific policies. In other words, it is a "super neutral" organization that only shows facts and what can be predicted.
The contents of the report are also checked word for word by representatives of each government.
In 2015, the Paris Agreement was concluded, which set the "1.5℃ target" based on the IPCC report.
It's up to us how to interpret their report, how to act from now on, and which predictions will become the real future through those actions.
